First appearing over 400 million years ago, ammonites are known as the most recognizable fossil. Ammonite shells have beautiful intricate patterns, which can help to distinguish their species.

      These sea creatures developed a hard outer shell to protect themselves from fish and other predators at a young age. Eventually, they grew to hunt fish and even other cephalopods. This hardshell also protected their delicate interior and created a shape that allowed them to use water propulsion to move their bodies about in the water.

      Because of their make-up, these small creatures were able to function well and live through many prehistoric eras. There is so much to learn about these ancient creatures.
