Why Ammonite Fossils Rock
Do you own a piece of history? Whether or not you are a fossil enthusiast, you will be sure to appreciate these fossilized creatures that existed millions of years ago. Fossils allow us to learn about ancient organisms and understand how they lived, when they lived, and where they lived. There are so many reasons why we think ammonite fossils rock!
All About Ammonites
Ammonites are classified as cephalopods and roamed in the shallow waters of the ocean. Other cephalopods we know include octopus, squid, and cuttlefish. First appearing over 400 million years ago, ammonites are known as the most recognizable fossil. Ammonite shells have beautiful intricate patterns, which can help to distinguish their species.
Here are some quick ways to identify an ammonite:
Ways to Identify an Ammonite
- Shell - Thick, hard, and sometimes coiled
- Septa - lines that separate the body chambers
- Patterns
These sea creatures developed a hard outer shell to protect themselves from fish and other predators at a young age. Eventually, they grew to hunt fish and even other cephalopods. This hardshell also protected their delicate interior and created a shape that allowed them to use water propulsion to move their bodies about in the water.
Because of their make-up, these small creatures were able to function well and live through many prehistoric eras. There is so much to learn about these ancient creatures.
Ammonites do exist today but mostly went extinct during the same era as Dinosaurs. At Whaler’s Locker, some fossils in our ammonite fossil collection come from the Jurassic period.
