Ammonites are the extinct relative of modern nautiloids. Ammonites lived in oceans all over the world beginning approximately 300 million years ago. Fossil ammonites in a wide variety of sizes from teeny-tiny to over 4’ across! The intricate patterns on the fossil are created from the interior structure of the shell. As it grows the animal creates a new, larger chamber to live in and seals up the previous chamber.
