Axis deer, native to India, were originally brought to Hawaii in 1860. King Kamehameha V received nine of them as a gift from Hong Kong. He released them on Molokai. In 1959/1960 nine deer were brought over to Maui. While it did establish a hunting population, there are no other natural predators and the populations have soared providing us with ample antler for carvings. Not to mention, the venison from Maui is the best we have ever tasted.
Hand carved Maui fish hook made by local artist Ray Peters. This beautiful hook is carved out of Maui axis deer antler and measures 1 5/8” tall. Hand wrapped with a handmade flemish twist Dacron cord in black.
