Maui scrimshander Ray Peters shows his true skill on this hand-engraved warthog tusk. It features a stunning rendering of Lahaina in the height of her whaling port days. The image has such exquisite detail; it is a true work of art. This is a tough one to let go of, but we know it will end up in a good home with the stellar customers we have.
Scrimshaw is an American art form that gained traction during the whaling boom of the 1800s. Whalers would whittle nautical images into discarded whale bones to pass the time between whale sightings. When they made port, they often gifted their artwork to their loved ones before heading off on another whaling adventure.
We have never had a warhog tusk this massive in our collection. This impressive warthog tusk is mounted on a hand-turned base made of beautiful tulipwood with water buffalo horn "Lahaina" name plate. The tusk measures approximately 6 1/4" long. Don’t miss out on this exceptional beauty!
