Skilled Maui artist and scrimshander Ray Peters uses traditional and stipple scrimshaw techniques to create incredibly detailed works of art. This warthog tusk features the Hawaiian Islands, a Hawaiian coastal scene with Hawaiian voyaging ship at the bottom. Each island is identified by name, and the piece also features the inclusion of a title: “Sandwich Islands” in script.
Scrimshanders are artists who practice the American folk-art scrimshaw. Scrimshaw is art etched into ivory or bone and colored with ink. This art style lived and survived with the whaling industry. Whalers passed the time between whale sightings by whittling images of nautical things into whale by-products like bone and cartilage.
This warthog tusk measures 3 3/8” tall, including the hand-turned cocobolo wood base.
