The Hawaiian sea turtle, or honu, is found worldwide in warm tropical and subtropical oceans, though they are native to Hawaii. Despite their endangered status, sightings are quite common in Hawaiian waters.
Ray Peters is a Maui scrimshander who often works on warthog tusks as his canvas for traditional scrimshaw and stippling techniques to etch intricate images of Hawaiian ocean life and nautical images. Here, he captures the likeness of a beloved trio of honu, rising to the surface of the ocean.
This scrimshaw piece is mounted on a hand made base of Brazilian cherry wood with a slice of warthog tusk. This tusk measures 3 1/2” tall.
