This incredible scrimshaw piece by Ray Peters features the image of a mother humpback whale and her calf. Peters uses traditional scrimshaw and stippling techniques to create the intricate detail you see here.
Each year, humpback whales migrate from their summer feeding grounds near Alaska to the warmer winter waters of Hawaii for breeding. Mothers stay close to their calves, often touching flippers in what appears to be actions of affection.
A mother and calf's likeness is captured on a warthog tusk and mounted on a piece of ram horn, then a base of hand turned snakewood. The tusk measures 3" tall.
