Known as the Picasso triggerfish to the rest of the world, here in Hawaii locally nicknamed the ’humuhumu', it became the state fish in 1958. This hand carved Hawaiian state fish, the Humuhumunukunukuapua’a, is by local artist Ray Peters out of water buffalo horn, measures 1 7/8” long and has Maui's fishhook carved in the center. The humuhumu hangs from a handmade flemish twist Dacron cord in black. Maximum length of 32”.
Water buffalo are the most common domesticated animal in the world. Used in agriculture and as a source of food. At least 130 million domestic water buffalo exist, and more people depend on them than on any other domestic animal. They are especially suitable for tilling rice fields, and their milk is richer in fat and protein than that of dairy cattle.
