Beautiful scrimshaw artwork on Maui axis deer antler depicting a Hawaiian sailing canoe by famous local artist Ray Peters. Both the artwork and the base are signed by Ray.
Originally native to India, the axis deer (chital) in Hawaii were introduced by King Kamehameha V to Molokai in the 1860's. He received them as a gift from Hong Kong. The deer were introduced to Maui island in the 1950s to increase hunting opportunities. With no natural predators, the deer populations have exploded.
This beautiful piece of antler is from a descendent of the deer that were gifted to King Kamehameha V. The scrimshaw is reminiscent of the rich history of whalers who took shore leave on Maui. This is truly a piece of Hawaii history.
The base measures 2 1/2" x 2" and stand 3 1/4" tall.
