Hand carved Maui fish hook made by local artist Ray Peters. This beautiful hook is carved out of water buffalo horn and measures 2” tall. Hand wrapped with a handmade flemish twist dacron cord in black.
Water buffalo are the most common domesticated animal in the world. Used in agriculture and as a source of food. At least 130 million domestic water buffalo exist, and more people depend on them than on any other domestic animal. They are especially suitable for tilling rice fields, and their milk is richer in fat and protein than that of dairy cattle.
Ray’s classic designs are based on traditional Hawaiian fishhooks. You may be familiar with Ray Peters as he is an accomplished scrimshaw artist who has been working with Whaler’s Locker for over 30 years. You will find some of his scrimshaw art here, and at the shop.
