Hand carved Maui fish hook made by local artist Ray Peters.  This beautiful hook is carved out of Steller’s sea cow bone and measures 2” tall.  Hand wrapped with a multicolored handmade flemish twist dacron cord in brown.

Steller’s sea cows lived off of one little island in between Alaska and Russia.  Closely related to dugongs and manatees, these animals were hunted to extinction in the late 1700’s.

Ray’s hooks are beautiful.  His classic designs are based on traditional Hawaiian fishhooks.  You may be familiar with Ray Peters as he is an accomplished scrimshaw artist who has been working with Whaler’s Locker for over 30 years. You will find some of his scrimshaw art here, and at the shop.

Upon receiving your hook, you will need to adjust the cord to fit you. Each cord is fitted with a bead that has been carved from the same piece of material the hook was carved from. That may be used to adjust the length of your necklace while being worn.  We have tied a loose knot in the cord which you may wish to adjust. Move the knot to the desired location, making sure that you can comfortably take the necklace on and off over your head. Once you find the perfect placement, tighten your knot, trim the ends, and burn the cut ends with a lighter to keep them from fraying. The cord is handmade by Ray and his wife out of Dacron, the same material used in modern day bow strings. This cord is waxed with bees wax when it is twisted so will feel a little tacky at first. This wears off rather quickly and the cord will relax and soften. If you need any assistance in adjusting your cord, please contact us
