Hand carved Maui fish hook made by local artist Ray Peters. This beautiful hook is carved out of Maui axis deer antler and measures 2 1/8” tall. Hand wrapped with a handmade flemish twist dacron cord in black.
Axis deer, native to India, were originally brought to Hawaii in 1860. King Kamehameha V received nine of them as a gift from Hong Kong. He released them on Molokai. In 1959/1960 nine deer were brought over to Maui. While it did establish a hunting population, there are no other natural predators and the populations have soared.
Ray’s classic designs are based on traditional Hawaiian fishhooks. You may be familiar with Ray Peters as he is an accomplished scrimshaw artist who has been working with Whaler’s Locker for over 30 years. You will find some of his scrimshaw art here, and at the shop.
