Hand carved Maui fish hook made by local artist Ray Peters. This beautiful hook is carved out of Steller’s sea cow bone and measures 2 1/2” tall. Hand wrapped with a handmade flemish twist dacron cord in black.
Steller’s sea cows lived off of one little island in between Alaska and Russia. Closely related to dugongs and manatees, these animals were hunted to extinction in the late 1700’s.
Ray’s classic designs are based on traditional Hawaiian fishhooks. You may be familiar with Ray Peters as he is an accomplished scrimshaw artist who has been working with Whaler’s Locker for over 30 years. You will find some of his scrimshaw art here, and at the shop.
